CULTURAL, DRUMMING & LANGUAGE PROGRAMM FOR UNIVERSITY/HIGH SCHOOL/GROUPS

Program Objective:
The main objective for the Culture, History and Society program is to give students the opportunity to appreciate West African culture and society to expose students to Ghanaian traditions and learn about her history from past to present; to afford students the opportunity to interact with both older and younger generations of the former Gold Coast and to gain immediate experience of how things were in the past.
WHO CAN ATTEND:
PYVO – GHANA cultural, drumming and language program is specially designed for university students and educators abroad in the department of African Studies, International Relations, Political Science, etc. It is however; also open to groups and individuals who may be interested to attend worldwide.
PROGRAMME DATE:
It’s ongoing and usually a two to three week program held in summer or a date proposed by a group.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE FIRST WEEK
Improve your knowledge in Africa by learning the local language which would give you a great opportunity to interact with Ghanaians and so better understand the people and their culture. Volunteers would be taking through a week of Ghanaian Twi lessons with a professional Twi teacher. Lessons would entail:
1ST DAY: ORIENTATION
Welcome to Ghana. Basic information about Ghana, language, people, cultures.
2ND DAY: CLASS BEGINS
Ghanaian greetings, conditions, age, phrases quantify and qualify people and objects, numbers, making a call for and commands with informal and formal future tense, alphabets etc.
3rd DAY: RELAXATION AND FREE TIME
4TH DAY: CLASS CONTINUES
Days of the week, time, Ghanaian names and their day of birth, colors, family, feelings, making training, shopping and bargaining.
5TH DAY: SOCIALIZATION AND SIGHTSEEING
Communication with people using the twi language and touring around Kumasi. (Manhyia palace, cultural center, etc).
6TH DAY: CLASSES CONTINUES
Parts of the body, physical terminology.
7TH DAY: CLOSING
Revision and final test
SECOND WEEK
DRUMMING AND DANCE
Join our expert drummers who will tutor you many of the African drumming beats, such as Adoa, Kete etc. Participants will be introduced to the different local made drums. Participants will have the chance to get a drum specially made for them, to take home and display their new-found skills to family and friends. Participants will witness a drumming and dancing troop from Adanwomase. Also, an elder from the palace will entertain you with cultural storytelling in English. Participants will get the chance to learn how to drum, dance with the dancing troops. Have a Feel of the rhythm of Africa. Observe and become skilled at the colorful and enthusiastic traditional African dancing. Learn to dance to the beat with traditional skilled dancers
(VILLAGE STAYS) LOCATION – ADANWOMASE
Volunteers would be transferred to a village called Adanwomase after a week of Twi lessons.
ACTIVITIES INCLUDE.
- Participants will sleep in a traditional household and perform daily activities with their host family and learn everyday life in the traditional kente weaving town. A trained tour guide will teach participants the history, meanings, and production steps of Ashanti kente cloth, offering participants the chance to try their hands at thread spinning, warping, and writing their names on hand bracelets using the weaving method.
Participants will get the chance to learn Adanwomase’s history and culture by visiting the chief’s palace, the traditional healer’s shrine, Adanwomase’s first house, cocoa farms, a forest shrine, and much more.- Participants will go to farm with the host family, work on the farm, see how palm wine is tapped, learn how to prepare (and taste) traditional dishes with an expert cook.
Participants will be taking through trekking sessions to the nearby villages.
P.Y.V.O-Ghana encourages all volunteers to apply for this project alongside their chosen projects in Ghana.
All the activities would be completed with P.Y.V.O staff members.

Accommodation
Participants will be staying at a lovely accommodation in Kumasi. Rooms will have air-conditioning, shower and Internet. There will be a lively outdoor bar for evening relaxation.
Meals
Meals together with vegetarian dishes and water will be served 3 times daily and are inclusive with program package. Drinks are not covered.
Field trips
Participants will travel in air-conditioned buses throughout their stay. All such buses have been duly registered and insured to operate. Drivers of these buses also have licenses and many years experience in driving.
Staff Support
PYVO – GHANA have exceptionally knowledgeable tour guides/program coordinators as they are called who will be with you during your stay.
